Tools you need to save battery on your gaming laptop

We all have dreamt of that gaming laptop and all that power and performance on the go. However, with great performance, comes a great price as your battery will go flat extremely fast and your machine will heat up like a toaster.

With that, it would drain your batteries so fast that you can’t even finish that last quest … or that last level … or that last battle.

What is the problem ?

Its pretty simple, you may have an i7 processor and its running many cores to give you that performance. To check how many cores you have, you can just press SHIFT+CTRL+ESC and you will be able to see it under the performance tab

In this case, there is 6 cores and every since core takes a certain amount of voltage to power it up. So when you are running games or any heavy task this starts firing up and heating up.

When this happens, your laptop fans will start spinning fast trying to get as much air to cool your entire CPU. Powering your CPU and powering the fan to cool your CPU will results in consuming your batteries fast. Also have to take into account that you may have a high end Graphics card which also requires to be cooled.

This is different in a gaming PC as you have way more space to place in larger fans or even liquid cooling. However, in the laptop, there is no room for that and you would require to do something about it.

What is the solution ?

One way of doing this is to undervolt your machine. Meaning give less power to the CPU & Graphics card and also ensuring you do not compromise your gaming experience too much. This post is to show you tools which you need to do exactly that. However the settings and how to use it varies from laptop to laptop, you may require to google it to figure out the best settings for your machine.

Undervolting the CPU

Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility – ( download )

This is one tool which you would be able to tweak your CPU voltage. Make sure you save the default profile before you make any changes so you are able to revert back if you made a mistake. If you add in more voltage, you are most likely overclocking your CPU and will add more power. Please do not make extreme adjustments unless you are absolutely sure on what you are doing.

Underclocking your GPU

MSI Afterburner – ( download )

This is the most common tool used to either overclock or underclock your GPU. There are many writeups about about using this tool. You may want to google it up and read more about it. You can relatively make a lot of changes here and its best done while you have your game open and to see if it has affected your game performance. You can adjust just how much you are willing to sacrifice in FPS for that extra battery savings.

What now ?

Once you have downloaded with it and familiar yourselves with these tools, go ahead and try out several settings. I managed to go from 4 hours on the battery to 7 hours on normal usage, however on the gamng way much less but a lot more compared to previously before the tweak.

REMEMBER ! do not make changes to this if you have NO idea what you are doing. Google and YouTube has tons of searches to refer to from people who has already done tweaking. You may be able to find the most optimal settings without compromising too much of your performance.

HAPPY GAMING !
